Kids

As part of a nation-wide program Cleveland County Library System is offering a free summer reading program for children from pre-school through 6th grade called One World, Many Stories.

Through those many stories, the children will travel to many foreign lands and learn about other cultures. There will be weekly programs at the Main Library in Shelby, Spangler Branch Library in Lawndale and at Township #3 school. The kick-off will be held on June 11, 2011 at 10 am in the Plaster Meeting Room of the Main Library. Blue Moon Puppets will be the entertainment.

Preschool programs will be held on Thursdays at 10 AM at the Main Library and on Mondays at 10 AM at the Spangler Branch Library beginning June 13, 2011.

The elementary school age programs will be on Thursdays at 10 AM at the Main Library, Mondays at 10 AM at the Spangler Branch Library and Fridays at 10 AM at Township # 3 School.

  • WHAT? The Summer Reading Program is a free series of programs with fun, games, crafts and storytelling all around a theme that changes each year.
  • WHO? All children ages 2 to 18 in Cleveland County. And now adults too!
  • WHERE? At the Cleveland County Memorial Library in Shelby and Spangler Branch Library in Lawndale. A satellite program is held at Casar Elementary School.
  • WHEN? From the second week of June to the end of July.
  • WHY? National studies have shown that children who participate in Summer Reading Programs maintain or increase their reading skills. Children who do not participate can lose as much as a half-year of their reading level by the time they return to school in the fall. This year nearly 1,000 children and their families attended the Summer Reading Program.
